Hunting Season - Keep Your Goats Safe!
THESE ARE IDEAS AND INFORMATION THAT WE USE ON OUR FARM. IF YOU DRESS OR COLLAR YOUR OWN GOATS ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM. NOT US. THESE ARE JUST IDEAS TO TAKE EXTRA CARE OF KEEPING YOUR GOATS SAFE.
Safety Vests
We live where hunters come to Deer and other Game Hunt. YES! We are Posted NO HUNTING. But. I like to take EXTRA precautions.
We JUST got back into Goats just before Hunting Season. So those around us are unaware that these animals, that could look like a Deer, are on our Property. So. I bought this Safety Vest while at a Garage Sale and tried it on Hiawatha, made some cuts, took out the zipper and added velcro....faster and easier to put on a Goat, and added a Belt... I am thinking about doing a DIY video to add to this site.
This vest actually looks and fits better than this (oddly angled) photo shows.
She not only wears it well. She is bright and you CAN see her, and it seems to be cut and put together right. I am thinking of adding something at the neck, just to tighten the front a bit.
Bright Bandanas
Your Goat will not mind wearing a Bright, preferable Bight Orange Bandana around it's neck. These can be seen from distances. However, they do not cover as much as the Goat as might be needed for some of the "Hunters" that should not be allowed to shoot guns. But that is a different subject, on a different day.
Keep in Mind, some people will not like this idea for the Goat's Safety. That is getting caught in twigs, branches, and other Goat Horns.
Any Bright Neon Color will work for this. I had this fabric for other projects and just cut two triangles out of it for these smaller goats. These are small white goats, and you would THINK any Hunter would not shoot their way. However, some Hunters, much to my dismay, do not check their background before shooting. EVERYTHING you can do to keep your Goats Safe during the Hunting Season, is important.
For me? I will do everything I can to keep my Goat's safe. I will weigh and measure and then decide which is safer. And a Bandana just doing Day Time Hours of Hunting Season...not a bad idea.
Bight Orange Collars
My Goats wear Collars. We could debate this all day. For us, this is the best practice. Yes. I am aware of horns. Yes, I am aware of other items that could get caught in Collars. Again. THIS it the Best for MY Farm. My Goat's not only wear Bright Collars, they have a Reflective Strip on them as will as an ID Tag. My small herd can quickly and easily be found with a flashlight in the dark. In the past, each of my Goats wore a Bell.
This photo of Walnut wearing a Collar that is far too long for her, was taken when she first arrived here. I am waiting for her correct sized reflective striped collar to arrive. But wanted a photo here. I bought 3 of these Collars on Clearance for less than $1.50 each, and will not cut it, to use as needed or for hold over until their correct collars arrive. They are great to have ready and waiting, if the Goat's ever get out, or for taking to an auction or Farm to look at a potential prospect to add to the Herd.
Even if you do not normally have Collars on your Goats, you might consider it during Hunting Season. Bight Orange would be best.
While this only covers a small potion, tiny really, area of the Goat. BUT! It is better than nothing and at least MOST Hunters will notice them....if the Goat is turned correctly toward the Hunter's view.
Vet Wrap
This is the cheapest way to make your Goats stand out different from a deer. You can buy Vet Wrap in a Farm Store for just a few dollars, and one roll will mark a few Goats.
Bight Orange is best, but any BRIGHT Color could work. And something, is better than nothing.
If you wrap Vet Wrap around your Goat's Horns and Legs during Hunting Season, they should be seen by Hunters and could save their lives.
Goat Packing During Hunting Season
IF your Pack or Hike with your Goats during Hunting Season, be SURE to mark them in Orange very well. Hunters will Not Expect to see Goats out in the woods.
You and Your Goats should wear Bight Orange and lots of it for your safety out in the Woods during Hunting Season.
If you do not own Orange Packs, buy Bright Orange Bandanas and attach them to the Packs in more than one place and on both sides of your Goats. This way, Hunters will be sure to see you and your goats.
Cart Or Wagon Goats During Hunting Season
And do NOT forget to put an Orange Something, Large Bandana, on your Cart or Wagon Goats too. YOU should wear Bright Orange as well as anyone with you as you enjoy your ride.
You may also think about an Orange Harness for your Goat to wear during Hunting Season. And Put some Orange on your Cart or Wagon, just some sort of Wrap and Bicycle Flag.
Other Types Of "Hunters"
There are other types of "Hunters" 'Out There'. Black Animals are NOT safe roaming away from your homes in the Fall of the Year. The Mentally Ill just might steal them, and use them for a Sacrifice.
I know. I hear you thinking, Sacrifice? How can MY Animals be THEIR Sacrifice? Remember who we are talking about. Thieves and Mentally Ill.
Keep those Black Animals Safe...AND KEEP THEM NEAR YOUR HOMES IN SEPT AND OCT. This also and especially applies to Black Cats. Dogs, Chickens, Rabbits, well? Any Black Animal really are not safe during these months. Even Angus Cattle have been 'Sacrificed' right out in Rancher's Fields.
Did you know that the Humane Society pulls all Black Animals from their viewing or adoptable floor during these Months? This started in the 1970s. I was living in St. Louis County at the time and took in Rabbits that came in to the City Shelter in the 1980s. The Workers there clued me in on what was going on. Needless to say, I was Horrified!
